Last summer I ended up having back surgery, suddenly. It was by far one of the craziest 4 weeks of my life. I was however well taken care of, my husband was incredible. This did derail almost all travel plans for the summer (we did make it to the Oregon Coast for Lo's dance competition however the day after).
By fall needless to say I was itching to get out. I was leery about actually booking any air travel because I was still only 8 weeks post-op and while I was feeling good didn't want to take any chances. So about a week before and feeling a bit of anxiety that this was my daughters last year home, she and I planned a road trip to visit several colleges. She wanted to see University of Colorado (CU), Colorado State University (CSU) and Montana State University (MSU) (all of which she has now been accepted to).
Road trips are uncharacteristic for me, however my husband and I have been doing this more and more with our jeep camping and it's kind of rubbing off on me. I love my little honda, audible books and my daughter, what better way to spend time than driving around the country?!
In total we drove over 2660 miles, passed through 6 states, stayed in 5, visited 3 colleges and 2 national parks, in 1 week. It was awesome!
One area I have never been and always wanted to was Whitefish, MT. So we loaded Doug into the jeep and went. It has to be my favorite areas of Montana, I love Bozeman, but this was a place both Rick and I could see ourselves retiring to.
We worried that it would be busy being a holiday weekend, but we had no issues. No traffic, we booked a pet friendly room at the Firebrand last minute (I highly recommend this place, gorgeous and walking distance to everywhere downtown). In fact we loved it so much decided to camp outside Glacier for a couple of extra days and extend our weekend.
We both loved every minute of this last minute getaway!
April, I'm a little late posting). My son is graduating this winter
with a degree in digital technology and culture and a minor in fine arts
(his creativity definitely does not come from me).
The first
one we attended in 2018 was a party at the frat house, that was an
experience. I am not much of a "drinker", I like a beverage here or
there so was a bit of fish out of water so to speak. This time was a
lot more chill. Enjoyed the awesome breweries in Moscow, wine tasting, a
dinner at the Lumber Yard, hiking and my favorite we attend a bear
enrichment!

However, I have decided I have got to finish Paris!
This will be the last few photo's of Paris.
While there we did all the classics, but my personal favorite museum was Musee de l Armee Invalides.
I love history and could've spent all day in there. We opted for about
a half day, saw Napoleons tomb, then moved over to the WWI and WWII
sections. We skipped the French Revolution, only for time. For me
these wars from the French perspective is fascinating. It was an
impressive display of artifacts from these two wars. The weaponry,
uniforms (french and all the foreigners), propaganda, posters, maps.
There is also the Charles De Gaulle section, amazing and I hope to go
back one day and spend even more time.
Disneyland Paris,
we did it. Lo loved it, I could've gone either way with it. It is an
easy train ride from the city (just read up on current scams first,
that's a long story), Disney Paris tickets are a quarter of the price of
the US parks. I would say that's because it's not quite as magical.
While it is neat and impressive, the rides are all more roller coaster
fun and fast, versus the impressive stories you ride through at
Disneyland. All in all I am glad we did it, but probably wouldn't visit
a second time!
Paris is overwhelming, in the sense there is so much to see and do. We spent a week there, initially I thought I'd never want to go back (keep in mind we came from Dublin with some of the most friendly people I have ever met traveling), but a few days in the beauty of this place grew on me and I know we were merely touching the surface on all there is to see. The photos you'll see are places Lo and I had each read about and made a point to see, there are many things left still to be seen. Most days were spent seeing several places, we averaged 10 miles a day walking, but really enjoyed this way of seeing the city. One entire day was spent at Euro Disney and I will do a separate post on that.
I have been to many countries in Europe, traveled to Asia and Central America as well. All with languages other than English, Paris was the one country you need to at least learn the basics in French to really enjoy your time there. This trip was Lo's dream trip. She had taken 3 years of French, and while she wasn't fluent she got us around, she ordered our macrons and baguettes daily, and translated how many euros were needed. I'd bring her back in a heart beat!

Obviously the Eiffel tower. We walked from the 6th here, it was a decent walk. We stopped on way through Rue Cler, a market street for a baguette (our Paris staple) and macarons. So many great shops along here to grab picnic items. We opted not to go up the tower, and instead go up the Arc de Triomphe so we would have views of the Eiffel Tower.

I have no idea what is in that, but has ruined all other hot chocolate for me. Sitting inside was lovely and should be done, however we craved their sweet treats after and they do have a shop at the front you can grab and go. The Tuileries is across the way so if it's busy the gardens make for a lovely place to eat.

We stayed in the 6th arrondissement, which is lined with fabulous cafes. This one happened to be smoke free, with great vegetarian foods and right across from the Luxembourg Gardens (which was my favorite). In fact I loved this whole area between the 5th and 6th. On this particular day we walked to see the Pantheon and went to the Marie Curie museum (small but so worth it). Ok and we can't forget french wine, even cheap french wine it good...like so good!

I have been out on medical leave and had high hopes to get through to a Whitefish, MT trip. However, I've read 5 books in 3 weeks and working on backing up 4 years (roughly 6000) photos...with the promise that I will in the future stay on top of this!

Ok here we go Paris! As I mentioned in previous post I flew Aer Lingus and did a stop over in Dublin. Flights I always look for the most direct route and that was an excellent choice! The hardest part for me about Paris was actually deciding where to stay. Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements, starting with 1 at the very center. 1 being the oldest part of the city, right where Notre Dame is located the going around that in a circular motion as the city was built out. My main objective was to be able to walk everywhere. From 1 to where the Eiffel Tower is 7. In searching I did a lot of google maps to figure out distances. My kids are use to walking a ton on vacation, but 2 miles out is about the furthest I like to be from one particular destination, because we also want it to be as efficient as possible. There is Uber and taxis, but Paris is much like NY, either taking the train or walking is faster than being stuck in a car. I ended up choosing the 6th and staying at the Hotel Bel Ami. This is a smaller boutique hotel, and knowing European rooms I upgraded to a slightly bigger room, the deluxe room since we would be spending a week here. I also did the breakfast. I know Paris has amazing cafes, and trust me we still enjoyed them, but I like doing hotel breakfast when I travel. My breakfast of choice is always fruit and coffee. I like not having to put thought into that part of my day while on vacation. While not giving thought to it, it also allowed us time while down there to plan/map out our day. Their breakfast was great. A pretty standard European breakfast, with cheese, breads, meats and eggs, along with fruit and delicious pastries.
I do not plan days out ahead of time, because until you are actually in the city you can't really plan how much you'll be able to cover in a day or not. The day we got in was relatively early and we only had an hour time change coming from Dublin, so we grabbed a handy paper map. At this point I had not activated my international phone plan (however it was set up ahead of time), in Dublin everything was so easy to get around I didn't need it. Paris is confusing, two days later I activated it to be able to use google maps! We went on a walk down the Siene, crossed over on a bridge that happened to be the bridge of locks, traveled down the Tuileries, ended up at the Louvre, decide to go in and see the Mona Lisa and a few other exhibits (this place is HUGE and crowded, this you should maybe go in with a plan, we did not and I couldn't wait to get out), realized we were close to making a loop so headed back to the hotel. After a quick change went around the corner and ate at Cafe de Flore (as a Hemingway fan this was a must), the french onion soup and hot chocolate were great, but keep in mind there are only a few smoke free restaurants in Paris, and this one seemed to be one with a lot of smokers.
When in Dublin touring Guinness is a must. You will also learn quite a bit bout the Guinness family while on the double decker buses. The family has a long history in Ireland and known for treating their workers very well. Early on providing housing and healthcare to all employees.
It is recommended to book your time online here, this is very easy and lots of available times.
We did the tour, learned to pour the perfect pint, took it to the top floor bar and enjoyed!
I do love whiskey, Irish whiskey in particular. There was no way I would visit Ireland and not go on a whiskey tasting/tour. There are several in Dublin. Teelings Whiskey Company looked great and is a stop before Guinness on the bus tour. We didn't do this one, but did bring their whiskey home. There's the famous Jameson Distillery, but I opted out of this and plan to visit next year at the distillery in Cork. We opted for a smaller one called Pearse Lyons. It was wonderful, it's located in the part of Dublin called the Liberties neighborhood, and our guide gave a fabulous history lesson about the liberties. The distillery itself is set in the former Church of St. James, which also has an impressive history. We tasted 5 whiskeys and their Irish gin, which was actually my favorite. On our tour there were only 8 of us. Lo and I were the only Americans, which to me is part of the fun, chatting with people from all over!

Also worth mentioning was the history of whiskey in Ireland. The Irish War of Independence and prohibition in the US cut off access to the two major markets. Whiskey production went into decline, and out of the hundreds of distilleries, only a few remained open. Now Ireland is once again the largest exporter of whiskey.

One of the highlights to the trip for me was Kilmainham Gaol. I learned so much on this tour. From where we stayed in Temple Bar we used our Do Dublin card and caught the hop on hop off across from Trinity College and rode it there. This is something else I HIGHLY recommend, getting on one of the hop on hop offs with a live English guide. Some have the automated tour but the live ones are fabulous. We rode this a few times as a mode of transportation around and each time learned a little more and always laughed! The guides at Kilmainham go over a lot of history about the fight for Irish independence. Most notably the Easter Rising in 1916 and the civil war that broke out a few years later in 1922. Sadly those that fought for Ireland's independence in 1916 would be divided in the years to come. Those led by Michael Collin and the pro-treaty provisional government, and those led by E'amon de Valera of the anti-treat IRA. De Valera's history alone at Kilmainham is impressive. If you can't tell I love history. One tip book ahead, OR if you forget like we did, the morning of at 9:15 they release tickets for that day and you can get one of the open time slots then.

The original part of the prison known as the West Wing opened in 1796. This is where during the great famine people as young as 4 committed crimes just to go to jail to be given a meager meal.
The more famous section that was added in 1860 know as the East Wing. This area reflected the new ideals of Victorian prison theory.
Much like flying Iceland Air they offer a free stopover in Dublin (likely anywhere in Ireland) for up to 7 days. Lo and I had a total of 11 travel days, and I knew that would be too long for me in Paris. I love London and Amsterdam so looked up doing either of those in combination with Paris. The cost was double what we would pay for Paris. For those that know me, I love travel planning and spend a significant time on it. Searching out places and deals, followed by reading reviews. After about 10 pages of notes and 20 open tabs I found Aer Lingus and couldn't believe how affordable it was. Plus the flight times and connections were excellent, and it was on an air bus, which for long flights I find more comfortable.
We left Seattle around 8pm and took the 9 hour flight to Dublin arriving the next morning in Dublin. Super easy waisting no time. The only downside (which there was none) was their onboard service was so good I hardly slept.

One thing I always heavily research ahead of time is airport transfers and the best way to do it. I like affordability if it's easy, like the tube in London, otherwise a cab or Uber it is.
Per the recommendation of a friend that had just been in Dublin a few month before she suggested the Do Dublin card. If I haven't mentioned yet, the Irish are amazing, so kind and helpful. We followed the signs found the bus line, and asked how it worked. I believe my ticket was 35 pounds (Ireland's currency is still the pound, except Northern Ireland which is the Euro) and Lo's should've been as well but the salesman gave her the child's price of 17 pounds. This card was our transfer to our hotel as well as a 72 hour hop on hop off bus tour, which any new city I recommend! Per another friends recommendation we stayed at Temple Bar Hotel. This was a fabulous place to stay. As the name states it's located in the Temple Bar area right on Fleet street. If you want to experience Irish music and nightlife this is where it's at. The hotel does provide ear plugs because it's pretty noisy but I slept so go it didn't matter.
This is all for part one of Dublin. In the next blog I'll got over Kilmainham Gaol , if there is one must in Dublin this is it. From this tour and jail you will truly understand why the Irish are so proud of the hard fought independence, and how relatively new it is. I'll also post on the Guinness family and of course when in Ireland, it is a must to drink Irish whiskey.

Ok and having an awesome travel partner is the best!
I do it, and according to social media it looks like with ease. However I will tell you I have a moment each time when I am on foreign soil, and I do not speak the language I panic. I mostly worry that I am not prepared enough for my children to keep them safe. However, it is short lived.
I just returned from 4 days in Dublin and 7 in Paris with my 17 year old daughter. I took lots of notes and plan to do several blog post. I do this so I can reference, but also so anyone can gather my do's and don't as well.
I am often told by people they wished they traveled and did these adventures but it's overwhelming, to plan, let alone do.
I get it. This started long ago for me. 2000 and 2001 I was a flight attendant for Untied Airlines. 3-5 nights a week I woke up in different cities around the U.S and abroad. Rarely was I with people I knew and well before there was such a thing as google maps or smart phones. I took full advantage of every place I landed to see what there was to see. I used the free hotel maps, asked questions at the concierge and took all those free rack cards with descriptions and set out. I learned to successfully navigate the "L" in Chicago, the "metro" in D.C and the "MTA" in NYC. Not an easy feat for a girl from central Washington. The more I traveled the more I wanted to see. I love people, culture and history, I was hooked on travel. Things came to an abrupt halt in 2001, and my career as a flight attendant was over.
2002 I had a second child and 2003 started a business. For the next 9 years I would focus on my little family and business. We traveled but often to Hawaii, for easy relaxing vacations. However in 2011 after going through a devastating divorce, in an attempt to pick my self up I decided to revisit the things that used to make me happy. I realized that during that 15 year relationship I had lost so much of who I was. I had become an "us" and zero clue who "I" was. All I knew was I use to love to travel. It was now just my children and I, so if I wanted to travel it would have to be them, because there was no way I was leaving without them, and it would have to be cheap.
We started with all the major cities in the U.S. I wanted to show them, and then branched out on a super cheap deal in 2014 to Iceland, from there the international bug came flooding back!

Hence where I am today. The memories from all our travels are something I will forever hold close to my heart. We have had a lot of mishaps along the way but I wouldn't change it. We've managed to find our way, communicate, and walk miles and miles in every new place. It reminded me of who I am, and that is a capable woman. Stay tuned for Dublin and Paris blog posts!
This is my 3rd passport and for whatever reason my new arrived and my old took another 9 agonizing days. My daughters new and old arrived same day.
I love my old passports. They tell a 10 year story of travel. Those stamps are my favorite souvenir of a trip.

My first passport holds my first time to Europe when I was 17, it was stamped in Hungary, Austria and Germany. I arrived in Hungary in June of 1995 while the Bosnian Serbian War was still going on. We were unloaded on the tarmac, placed in a bus with armed guards. I was 17 and had never been out of the country (with the exception of Canada), and just entered one that was rather close to a war torn country. As well as being in a country that had only received it's independence from the Soviet Union 4 years prior.
This same passport would also go on to represent my time with United Airlines. This one held a work visa for both France and China, as well as entries into Germany, Australia, Hong Kong and Japan.
My second passport is very much a representation of a time as a single mom traveling with my children. The stamps in this one gave me courage, and a true sense of independence. I have 3 stamps to Iceland, once with both my kids and the other 2 with just my son, multiple stamps to Costa Rica, a country I unexpectedly fell in love with and made me want to learn Spanish. There's the UK, my son and I arrived in London the day after a terrorist attack, and experienced the unwavering love and unity. We happened to be in front of Theresa Mays residence as she left to Parliament to deliver article 50, the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union.
All these memories are stored in that little booklet I waited anxiously to be returned.
I got up early while it was still dark, with zero plans other than to take my dog for a run....at some point. Sitting down with coffee and trying to get my spring trip all dialed in. I had a brief moment where my thoughts drifted to using this day to put away Christmas decorations. Then I reminded myself, its the weekend. I don't have to be productive in all ways. I also love my decorations and now that the holidays are over, I get to enjoy them. Sitting and enjoying my coffee, geeking out on travel plans, that is what I would do today. No plans, just the moment.Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-51283751495820421022018-12-31T22:39:00.001-08:002018-12-31T22:39:25.075-08:00Books, and More Books2018 I returned to one of my greatest loves, reading. Once I started there was no stopping me!

I've been trying to keep track of them on Pinterest in hopes I could rememeber to share them with other book lovers. I also finally converted to a kindle and that has been a game changer, as much as I love the smell and feel of books my kindle goes everywhere with me. Plus I discovered through prime I get a free book a month!

Here's a few of this years favorites (I will say I got really caught up in WWII historical fictions and couldn't get enough).
These three were my favorites:
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht
Nightingale by Kristen Hannah (this is a MUST read, one of these most beautiful stories I have ever read). I am currently on the wait list for The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah so we will see if that makes the 2019 list.

Other well worth mentionables:
The Orphans Tale by Pam Jenoff
Love and Ruin by Paula Mclain (if you read the Paris Wife this is about Hemingway 3rd wife)
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
The Woman in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck

In all I think I finished close to 20 books this year. I have always been an avid reader, then social media was created, or more so I finally joined. I got sidetracked with life (and social media), and just forget how much joy reading brings me. However with work being so busy, instead of catching up on social media I hop in bed between 8-9 (the joys of having older kids, I get to go to bed early again) and read! The pure joy of reading is back!

I am almost done with The Boat People by Sharon Bala and Born Survivors by Wendy Holden (because everyone reads two books at once right?!?!) I would add both on the worth reading list!

It's the time to take a moment and reflect on what was. My heart is always filled with gratitude, for the good people in my life, mine and my families health, the experiences we have shared, and the ability to have been present.

2018 brought mostly all good and I am so grateful for that. The year started with my son starting his junior year at WSU, my daughter getting her license (ok that was scary). My son made the Presidents honor roll at WSU! We got the jeep set up and set out on a 4 state road trip camping in some of the most beautiful places on earth. I worked a lot this past summer, running the logistics of summer camps for symphony, chamber music, theater, film and acting camps, while throwing in two major concerts in there. It was madness at times but got to work with some of my favorite people ever. Lo and I took the jeep and escaped the smoke and camped at Deception Pass (how I had not been there before is beyond me). The jeep brought on this new sense of freedom and independence to travel in a new way (planes and hotels had always been my preferred method), with my dog! Lo and I returned to NYC for our 5th time together in September, and possibly one of the most fun times I have had there. We navigated the subway like champs, toured Columbia and NYU (oh to be that young again). I introduced her to Canal street shopping, somehow back in my 20's being lured into a warehouse to buy Kate Spade knockoffs seemed like a good idea. At 40 with my daughter, we chickened out, much to my husband at homes relief. Opted instead for shopping through SOHO. She talked me into doing the stand by line for Jimmy Fallon and sure enough we got into the taping of his show in Central Park! Broadway binged like always. We are addicts that only buy from TKTS and see as much as we can. Randomly met Nikki Reed.
Came back and Lo started her junior year of high school and then her freshman year of college (doing running start), and back to dancing. Rick and I celebrated my birthday with a fabulous 5 days in Bend, hiking, and eating our way through, again with our dog!
The common theme is experiences. For me this sums up my years. I still have the couches I bought used off of a friend 8 years ago, the bar stools from the previous owner of this house, the dining table found from a friend selling it on FB and the coffee table from my sister. Quite honestly with the exception of a roof over our heads and reliable transportation the material things in life are not me, nor have they ever been or do I pretend for them to be. My life is about the people I share it with, the love that comes from and is given to those around me. I don't love the term "blessed" because I've seen it shared so randomly for things throughout social media. So lets just go with my heart is content. I am happy, I am grateful. I honor every bit of my past as I welcome in a new year. Cheers to you all!
We made the final stop in Yellowstone and watched old Faithful, with about several hundred people.
Then rolled out and into the Grand Tetons National Park. We didn't have reservations (again because it wasn't quite peak season) but drove into Colter Bay Campgroud and got a spot. Traveling with the jeep is great because we use tent spots, and in this park those were the really great spots. *I have heard Jenny Lake is phenomenal, however I was worried we weren't early enough for a spot there and didn't want to miss our chance at Colter Bay.
From the campsites it's a short walk (5 minutes) to the lake with impressive views of the Grand Tetons. We packed a beverage, sat and enjoyed. The only thing that would've made it better was our paddle boards. We spent 2 nights here, because we hiked in the Tetons the next day. Honestly I could've spent several days in the national park exploring. It was not as busy as Yellowstone, there are so many hikes easily accessible at varying degrees of distance and difficulty. Alas we were on a road trip and needed to keep going. A place that had been on a longtime bucket list was Jackson Hole, WY. so out of the national park we went and right into Jackson. We stayed at the White Bufffalo Club, it was great. Had a beer and dinner at the Snake River Brewing, also good. The town itself is easy to see on foot, beautiful and packed with great restaurants. I was glad to stay a night there, but next time would camp in the park and drive in.
We were undecided on our route from here. We debated heading towards Stanley and camping in the Sawtooth Mountains, however the appeal of the Patagonia Outlet in Dillon, MT lead us to the Bitterroots.
The drive between Jackson and Dillon was beautiful. We settled on camping at Lake Como. We both agreed coming back next year and exploring the Bitterroots is in order. I instantly fell in love with this area.
I know this was my husbands birthday trip, but I feel like he gave me such a gift on this trip. Seeing the country in a way I have never seen before. I can't wait for more!

* one note, while I love to disconnect I had my 21 and 16 year old kids staying at my house. I have AT&T and rarely had cell service on this trip. Not knowing where we were going I tried to pop into places that had WiFi and message my kids ahead of time our plan, and check in with them. This definitely made me nervous at times!Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-39074028057458519682018-10-07T19:29:00.000-07:002018-10-07T19:29:18.994-07:00The Almost a Half Century Road TripIn June my husband and I embarked on a 10 day road trip. My husband was turning 50 in July and his perfect way to celebrate was a road trip. Being a gal that absolutely loves flying and often gets motion sick in the car, my initial response was less than excited. However, as it got closer to leaving we had a few planned stops that I really wanted to see, like Bozeman MT and Jackson WY. We planned hotels in these places, and the rest if the trip would be unscheduled and go where the jeep took us!
For the road trip we downloaded several audible books. As an avid reader with little time to read this was downright amazing!

Because my husband is a true gentleman, and even though this was his birthday trip he wanted to ensure I was comfortable and had a good time. We decided the first day we wouldn't drive more than 6 hours. We camped the first night along the St. Joe river (thanks to our nephew for that tip). Truly beautiful, it did rain but the drive along the St Joe was absolutely breathtaking.
Next few nights, after a quick stop in Missoula we spent falling in love with Bozeman. Rick's family is from Bozeman and his great-great grandfather started Bozeman Brewing before prohibition. His family also owned the Lehrkind Mansion so we walked all over visiting all the sights.
I would highly recommend the hotel we stayed at call The Lark. The staff was the friendliest I have ever encounter, location is walking distance to everything in town, and the newly remodeled rooms were great!
Then onto Yellowstone, we entered through the North. Camped in Yellowstone at Canyon Campground. Here's the thing about Yellowstone, it's worth seeing, just also not lingering there long. We were there the first week of June, technically before the busy time....if there is such a thing. I didn't love the campground. It was OK for proximity to get up and get a head start on the day and sights which was essential (early am's and evening were less crowded), but you felt like they crammed as many people as possible into the campground. We had a good laugh as the temps while we were there dropped to 25 degrees. That evening we ate cheese and smoked salmon on a plate in the jeep while watching a movie on the Ipad, because it was too cold to be outside. Sleeping in the jeep was fine, I packed appropriately to stay warm, just couldn't hang out outside comfortably!
These are some of the highlights. Like I said it is worth seeing. I took a ton of photos, but I don't believe any can truly to do the beauty justice. We also saw bison and a grizzly cub, would love to be there at a time to see the wolves.
Part 2...The Tetons, Jackson and the Bitterroots will be the next post!

I am still learning the ropes of my new job, and found that the summers are crazy. Between summer camps, chamber concerts and music in the meadow, I worked about 60 hours a week. I took Tuesdays off and entirely unconnected by hitting the mountains with Lo and Doug. I've been told that all we did put on this summer at work was really great, but truth be told I was just trying to keep my head above water and survive I didn't actually "see" what we were doing!
Not all was lost on work this summer, Rick and I started the summer with a 10 road trip with the jeep, camping on the St. Joe river in Idaho, traveling through Missoula, then staying a couple nights in Bozeman, onto camping in Yellowstone, then the Grand Tetons, Jackson, WY and ending the trip camping in the Bitterroots, an area I hope to return to soon. My plan is to blog here soon about the trip. We had such an amazing time, it was the first big trip with the jeep since having the ursa minor (pop up top) added to it. Maybe I'll blog about that as well, but we are in love with it.

Lo is in her junior year of HS but is doing running start so she didn't start back to school until today. She and I escaped last week to NYC, where we toured Columbia University, and NYU. Saw Waitress and Come From Away (this one easily is now in my top 5 musicals). Went to ground zero on 9/11 shopped Canal Street (this was a first for Lo), visited the MOMA, saw the live taping of the Jimmy Fallon show and just absorbed all the city life we could in 5 full days. That city always fills something in me, that I am unaware I need. As we left I was a little sad, like perhaps I was leaving a piece of my heart behind. However, I realized my heart is not so much divided between the mountains and open space of home and the energy, diversity and culture of NYC as it is just perfectly balanced.

People life truly is amazing, and so very very good. Next month I will be 41, I am so honored to be aging, and getting to live this amazing life. So much in life hasn't made sense, but all of it has made me a stronger, more patient person. A better version of myself that I didn't know existed.

Cheers, and I hope to be back blogging soon. With at least pictures of the recent adventures!Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-36547725889886028432018-05-09T15:39:00.000-07:002018-05-09T15:39:51.786-07:00Slowing DownI got a dog last August from our Humane Society. Lo and I had taken him on a hike like we have with so many other dogs, but there was something about when I put him back in the kennel I knew he was my dog. I was going through some serious transition at the time, my business ending and I had already started with Horizon so the timing seemed off, but there was such a strong feeling I couldn't ignore. The fact that he was clearly part border collie was the saving grace to appeal to my husband who had just lost his border collie mix after 16 years and was certain we did not need another dog.

After losing Kaiser, it was hard being out on the trails without him. I'd go but it wasn't the same. The joy and security I felt on our adventures was now missing, and I desperately wanted it back. I was also unsure about getting a dog, I knew I did not want a puppy. You can't run with a puppy until they are almost a year old, and my sole purpose for wanting a dog was to run. I didn't want to do the puppy chewing, digging and getting up in the middle of the night and most importantly I knew I did want a rescue dog. After having taken so many great ones out, I knew that would be my next dog. I will say, rescues are not for everyone. It is hard because you do not know their history or what they have been through. My kids were older so I wasn't worried about them, and I knew I would take the time and spend the money I needed to on training a dog. And I did.

Doug is what his name became. He was a stray that had been adopted out twice and quickly returned (he had and still has separation anxiety). We came up with some really great names, but walking amongst the douglas firs I called him Doug and it was the first time he responded, so he became Doug.

We run or hike 6 days a week. We typically go 4-7 miles, and once a week 10-15. Even though I am running more than I ever have in my life, I am running slower. I am taking it all in. I stop and watch Doug run, I stop and watch the birds, we walk up the beautiful places (and there are a lot) so we don't miss them.

I am not signed up for any trail races, for the first time in years. Not because I don't like them but after losing Kaiser, I regretted the time I didn't spend with him. The days those races would come I always wished he could be with me. So this year, I just run with Doug, slowly, taking it in.
The one where I really appreciate aging. I love where I am in life right now. There is a calm, perhaps it's because my kids are older (one in college and one is 16) and life seems to slow WAY down when you are no longer running all different directions. Granted I loved that time, but it was exhausting! It could be my husband, I am crazy in love with this man and our life. He will retire in less than 10 years, kids will be out of college, our house will be paid off by then. That's all so soon, when I think of how fast the last 8 crazy years have gone. God willing we will be in good health. I don't wish for time to go fast, but knowing this is all around the corner, makes you appreciate life in the very moment. Maybe it's that I am no longer self employed. As amazing as that almost 15 year run was, I have days off now. I have paid vacation, I am not running around making trips to the hospital several times a day. Some days I work from home, I get up early, run my dog, shower put on some comfy clothes and slippers and say to hell with make up.
I know being in good health is certainly a part of it. I love the wisdom that comes with getting older, the letting go of stress. That comes from the confidence to eliminate toxic people from your life.
I want to embrace this period, it feels well deserved.
After my ex husband left at the end of 2010, I made a very conscience decision to focus on my kids and myself. I had been with my ex since I was 18, we had been together for 15 years. I lost the core of who I was. It was truly the most healing therapeutic time of my life. To take time to process the shit show of that year, then dive into finding myself.
I truly believe that period of self discovery allowed me the time to be closer than ever with my kids. It was just us, and I can look back on that and really appreciate our time together. When I met my husband, he had been on a similar path, together there was a love and calm all in one I had never felt.

As I started writing this two days ago, my friend messaged me. It was the 8 year anniversary of her very best friend passing away. This lovely woman was 31 with a 2 year old daughter and infant son. She died of breast cancer. It was yet another reminder to live the very best life I can. Be kind, speak the truth and love with your whole heart. It is an honor to be alive.Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-1735784284762655012018-04-16T15:09:00.001-07:002018-04-16T15:09:44.775-07:00In one week my first born turned 21 and I got to go to my first ever Moms weekend at WSU.
My son spent two years out here at the community college getting his AA degree. Probably the best thing ever. Not only did we save at least $30,000, but he worked and saved. I am helping with his tuition but he is paying his living and all expenses associated with it on his own, without loans. He is there with 4 of his best friends from Wenatchee, having the time of his life and doing really well in school. He is majoring in a degree he found on his own, that couldn't fit him better and loving his classes.
Personally I feel two years at a University might be enough. You are excited about this new chapter, you do well, make great friends and move on before any of it gets old.
My son received a quality education out here at the community college. He learned the ropes in a smaller environment of meeting with advisers, registering for classes, and even how to pay. He learned the expectations of the professors at a college level. In the time he was there, a handful of his high school classmates showed up during the summer to retake a class they took at an University to get a better grade. After paying one semester of his college I cannot imagine having to pay for a class twice. My son was able to develop great relationships with his teachers at the community college because of the smaller class size. Now with his AA he moved right into his major in his junior year, and because it is upper level the class sizes aren't so bad.

As for turning 21 and Moms weekend, I am not a big drinker but I loved every minute taking it in. Seeing his new friends, as well as the amazing bond with his old friends. Observing him as an adult, navigating life on his own. It is such a beatiful thing.

I miss him, but I am so happy for where he is in his life. My advice to parents is spend that money on taking memorable trips with your kids while they are home, take time off work to hang with them, give up going out at nights to stay home and watch movies. My son and I have traveled the world together. We've fallen in love with countries together. We've watched Goonies (my favorite movie) probably a dozen times and visited the goonie house. We've hiked all over the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness together. I do not regret taking any time off or money spent on doing that with my son. That was our time together, now it's his time. His time to make new memories, travel with friends, live in different places. Create his own life. I would say after spending the weekend with him in his new home, he's off to a good start!
We have a visiting artist series and community outreach is part of bringing the artist in. I wanted to tag along to see what it's all about. Let me tell you I felt like I had the best job ever, it was truly inspiring watching her with the kids.
If you don't know who she is here is her AGT Audition.
She has been singing sine she was 4 but lost her hearing at 18. One of the things she said to the kids that really resonated with me was the worst thing she could imagine happening to her did, yet she now considers it the best thing to have happened to her, because she loves more, values her friends and family more and overall loves her life more now than she did before. That's pretty powerful coming from someone that lost one of her most vital senses.

I used to believe my marriage ending would be the worst thing to happen. It happened, and I became a stronger independent woman, one that I could respect. My friendships became deeper. I cut out the toxic people in my life, and appreciated authentic people so much more.

Then my business ended this last September. I didn't want it to end, in part for the reasons above. I truly loved (and still) do the people of the hospital. Through my divorce they were one of my biggest sources of support. I will never forget their kindness, and for that reason I never wanted to leave. However, I wasn't actually profitable. I paid my employees, most of my bills and lived extremely frugal on my meager salary. The trade off was my flexibility and to show up each day doing exactly what I loved with my favorite people. After initiative 1433 passed (raising minimum wage in 2018 to 11.50 and providing sick pay, with minimum wage going to $13 by 2020) Rick and I had many serious conversations. I had always paid my long term employees above minimum wage and would no longer be able to do so, or staying open in the evenings only to sell a coffee or two. We looked over many scenarios and none made sense to keep going, but I am stubborn! I probably would've kept going until I crawled into a financial hole so deep I couldn't get out. That last day, I found a buyer to purchase all my equipment. Everyone wanted me to hold onto it, but that was more of a depressing thought. I wanted my beautiful machine to live on, and I wanted to pay off my debt. So that's exactly what I did, sold enough to cover the existing debt on my business, and go forward.

I had always wanted to work at the airport, so that's what I did. I had a blast, unfortunately it didn't pay enough to cover my gas to get to work. I did it for 5 months, loved almost every shift and the people I met (plus lifting heavy luggage was an excellent work out). I also started working at my favorite cafe, and loved it. Then a job totally not on my radar came up and I took it. I am learning so much. One of the things I loved the most about the hospital was how inspired by the staff I always felt. This new job I am being inspired as well. We are a non-profit and the generosity of the community in the name of the arts make my heart so full. We have an amazing executive director that I love working for. Then I get to do things like go around and listen to Mandy talk to hundreds of kids, knowing they were inspired by this amazing lady, well it makes me emotional in a good way. The other bonus not to be taken for granted is now I get paid to do this, and that is really nice!
Life is constantly changing and directing us in directions, we might not think we want to go, but if you can trust it and look for the good rather than dwell on the bad, things will work in your favor.

Peace and love my friends.Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-46606994980598669542018-02-25T19:08:00.000-08:002018-02-25T20:52:33.719-08:00LovesI am riding a bit of a high in life right now. Perhaps it's the age (40) and the wisdom that comes with that ;)
I recently met a friend for happy hour. She and I have long had they same acquaintances but were only introduced in person a couple of years ago. We are kindred spirits and can talk for hours in the most refreshing way. We had a great conversation the other night about the power of the mind, and with a positive and accepting attitude it truly delivers the happiness you desire (if that makes any sense).
We were both previously divorced, 40, and now have wonderful men in our life. We also hold nothing but gratitude in our hearts for those that have come before and lead us to where we are now.
I have had several loves in my life, starting back over 20 years ago. Each played a wonderful part in my life, and I feel so lucky to have met these men and in some form had a relationship with them that lead me to feel love with them. I believe love lasts forever, it can change but you will always love that person.
I am still friends with all of them, they all have wonderful woman in their life, and it fills me with such joy. It took several years to get here with my Ex husband, but I knew we would. It took years for me to understand that the other men I have loved could also have a place in my life as well, not a romantic one obviously but one of friendship with a shared past and mutual respect for one another.
These men before my husband I truly believe led me to him. I believe some people have one great love, and it must be so strong and complete, and no doubt a beautiful thing. I loved several men, all played a part leading me to my husband, and I love him something fierce. I love this man in a way I have never loved before, one that involves a deeper level of respect. I truly believe I did not meet him until 7 years ago for a reason, at a time when I could fully appreciate all he is. Had I met him in my twenties I am not sure I would've know what I had, and certainly not appreciated him the way I do now. He is my complete package, a love that has evolved, and will continue to evolve. One of the great qualities that drew me to him was his love for others in his life that have come before me. He has such respect for them, and I am grateful for their part in his life as well.
I love life, very much.

I'll leave you with one of my favorite quotes:

"The two hardest tests on the spiritual road are the patience to wait for the right moment and the courage not to be disappointed with what we encounter." -Paulo CoelhoJennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-19262201582102980272018-01-24T15:21:00.000-08:002018-01-24T15:21:19.769-08:00Renewed Energy, Renewed Blog (hopefully)I spent a couple hours the other night feeling inspired and started working on a new website. It was quite fancy. Then the reality struck, I am not a fancy person. It had way to many bells and whistles it felt like things would get lost. I'm more of a straight to the point kind of gal.
So with some renewed creative energy, I plan to blog. However I want to blog and share photos like I did in the past, but I got lazy and was blogging off my ipad using Blogsy. Blogsy is no more, and through blogger I still can't upload photos. Which means I need to organize my dang photos on the external hard-drive. Sadly the last iPhone dump I did was beginning of 2017. Soon, very soon! Keep checking back, and as always if you don't want to read what I have to say, you have a choice not to. The beauty of the blog!Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-21854608301499149852017-12-01T10:46:00.000-08:002017-12-01T10:46:48.829-08:00Moderation, what's that?Being 40 and experiencing a career change is much like when I was 33 and ending a 15 year relationship.
Like getting divorced I was happy where I was when everything ended. I had changed jobs only once in the past and that was due to a terrorist attack. So it's safe to say I like to commit to something, settle in and do it well.
I am definitely NOT one of those people that changes careers, cars and/or men every few years (in fact I have a new car, but rarely drive it because I like my old car). I'm a pretty content person with my life.
I got a cold this week and my boss asked if I had been stressed, I don't remember the last time I was truly stressed (OK I do but that was just because two people were lying so much it was stressful trying to decipher the truth). The extent of my stress is trying to get to yoga and find a parking spot on time, when I live in a town where people consistently drive 5 under the speed limit and I want to go 5 over.

Anyways my job ends, and I have to idea what I really want to do. I go to work at the airport part time, this is also the first time in my life where I am in a good place financially so this is really about figuring out what makes me happy.
Well, like being single after a divorce, opportunities start appearing out of the woodwork. Job opportunities I had never even considered. Legit and good ones, I ended up going with managing a cafe, because it felt comfortable. I was also helping a friend at a wine bar, and still at the airport. So September I worked part time, October I was back to 50-60 hours a week. As a business owner, I had put in this much time, although I worked the stand only 25-30 hours a week everyone assumed that's all I worked. Working and balancing all these jobs really is not that difficult for me. What is difficult is saying no. I don't need to be working this much, but I feel grateful for the opportunity. I also like the income, and being able to make a little extra to help my son with college.
I'm currently working on saying no, and dwindling down to 40 hours again. The cafe is good, just very busy and a lot of work. The airport I absolutely love, but don't actually make anything, the wine bar, well I think I am better at drinking wine.
This is why I haven't been blogging (just in my head), because I basically work, chat with Lo surf the internet for an hour then sleep!
Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted where this all leads.Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3857071159519722597.post-19527862309333972592017-10-07T12:18:00.001-07:002017-10-07T12:18:53.871-07:00Back at It
To say these last few months have been crazy is an understatement. In a nut shell, the hospital terminated my contract after 14 years, so August 30th was a wrap.

Adjustment has been just that. I started a job with Horizon Air in the beginning of August, so the month of August was 50-60 hour work weeks. Surprisingly I thrived with that chaos. It was the perfect distraction. Granted I missed doing anything with anybody, but my dear friends made sure to keep checking in on me.

The last week of August because I can't seem to just ever relish in calm I adopted a dog.

We named him Doug. He's about 18 months old and the best we can guess a Shepard, border collie mix. Ridiculously smart, and very energetic. Providing my best September distraction. I get Doug out every single day. We hike or run anywhere from 4-11 miles. He has been excellent for my fitness, and sleep!

My daughter started her sophomore year of school.

I've been trying to adjust to part time work, thankfully I truly have the most supportive spouse around. I miss the staff and employees something fierce. I didn't really make money, I could've if I would've been more serious about charging people, but that would've taken the joy out of it. What I will say is I consider myself truly lucky to have been there for 14 years. I don't know many people that get to say they LOVE doing exactly what they get to do and for so long. I will mourn it for some time. The hospital was part of me, and my family. When my husband had an affair and then we divorced, that was the hardest times in my life, and I thank God I was exactly where I was during that. The staff seriously took me under their wings and got me through some very dark days.

Now I'm about to turn 40, and figure out what else I want to do. It's both scary and exciting. I jumped into Horizon and I actually love the job, but there are too many logistics that just don't make sense to make it work, so for this month I am finishing out work there, and (because clearly I'm not very good at part time gig) back to making coffee again. I got a great offer from a local place, after talking it over with Rick we decided that's probably the best fit. It's a great schedule, with low stress and allows the flexibility for us to do things away.

That's the update for now.

Posted with Blogsy
Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10180250376102176906noreply@blogger.com0
