Bummer

We're down, at least 3 of the 4 of us.  Lo came down with a cough and cold yesterday.  I was in denial that I had it (I thought I must've overdone it with back to back hard swims), but today there was no denying it, I feel like crap. Luke's the only one holding strong.  It's nothing bad just annoying.
The plus side is getting the day to snuggle with my girl.  I know I blog a lot about the free time I now have, but my greatest love, and where I would drop everything is just taking it in with my kids.  I loved when they were little, and my workouts, at most consisted of walking the dog and stroller.  I remember wanting so badly to get off work to get home to them.  I  have a very tight bond with both of my kids, and I will NEVER regret the time I spent with them opposed to working out, or going out.  I am glad that in my twenties I actually had that wisdom of how fast that time flies, and how the time spent then is the  building blocks to the future relationship with them.
I was recently reading an article on a parenting style, I didn't know the way I parented had a name, but now it does.  Here's a brief little article on attachment parenting.  Yep I was one of those, I nursed Lo until 18 months (planned to go until she was 2, but she stopped), and Luke slept in my bed until the year before his sister was born and then Lo for the next few years.  When my ex left, that very night Lo moved her eye shades and alarm clock in my room and came back to my bed.  A gesture that melted my heart.  There were no spankings or cry outs in this house.  I don't judge, you do what parenting works for you, but this is the way I chose to parent.
As much as I don't want her sick, or the rest of us, being able to stop and just snuggle on the couch and watch movies is pretty sweet.
My go to remedy every time

Hello Legs

This was too gorgeous to not share!
The view from my first ride outside in 6 weeks! I have tolerance for the trainer for about 4 weeks, and refuse to go to the gym in the winter (sick sweaty people not cleaning their machines well enough, and sick kids in the child care, no thanks). I have winter riding gear, but know myself well enough to know that below 35 degrees makes me grumpy. Today was 38 and I over dressed (fine by me)! Aired up my cross bike, got my winter riding gloves out ( thank you Rick for that awesome gift. If your hands get cold easy, GORE makes the best winter riding glove), and set off to Eaglerock, where the sun was shining. I may have been a little too ambitious for the first ride out, took off up Burch Mtn Rd. the legs burned, but my lungs felt fine, then 1 more hill up Lovel to April, this ones not as bad! I was smiling so big the whole time, my teeth were cold!
Great ride, but may have given too much, my pool workout tonight felt like I was pulling a 5 gallon bucket!

She Does It!

The kids didn't have school again today for records day.  The last two weeks Lo has expressed an interest to go Nordic ski again.  Last time she tried it (maybe 4 years ago) was a fail.  We were all at the golf course and I left her dad and her to it, came up to them in the back she was in tears, and he had lost all patience.  Since then she made up her mind she didn't like it.   I skied early this weekend and asked each time if she wanted to go then, but she told me "she doesn't really do the morning thing" OK, whatever.  I had a pretty good feeling today would be as good as it gets, it was warm (30 degrees) and a weekday, so very few people.  The main goal was just to let it be about her, and cross my fingers she enjoyed it.
She did great, and loved it.  We went to the hatchery (so she and Luke could go to O'gradys after, and I could skate a couple more laps), there's the "front" half of the loop, and in that front half, near the back, there's a cut off that will allow you to avoid the 1 hill on this half, making this micro loop 2k, we got done, I asked her if she was ready for hot chocolate or wanted to go again, to my surprise she wanted to go again.  So lets hope this memory of a good time gets stuck in her head!

Another bonus also happened.  I haven't been on my classic skis since I  learned to skate 5 years ago, but figured if I was going to teach her I better be doing the same, so I'd know what I was talking about.  I'd forgotten how much I enjoy classic skiing, also forgot how hard it is to be good at the technique.  I read somewhere the best nordic skiers spend 60% on their classics and 40% on their skates, well I love skating too much to give up that much time on them, but my new goal is on Fridays to always do 1 lap classic, then hit the skates!

there she is in action!

A glimpse of my car...all winter.  My bf insist the rack I have on my car will ruin my ski's

Basset get Photographed

I've been having a blast taking pics of Obie lately.  He's so sad looking, it's kind of fun.  Good morning from Lo and Obie

Tips

Sitting here waiting for Lo to get home from the Wild game, Rick was showing me a few videos to help with my skate technique. Rick's a great teacher, but since I won't be loaning him out, I'll share the video.

For friends in the area wanting to ski or know the different options. We have 3 in Leavenworth (when there's enough snow). My personal favorite is the Icicle River Trail (hatchery), probably  because it has the biggest loop, one full loop is 8k. However weekends get crowded. If you get there and  ski  before 10 its great, otherwise I  head to the golf course, on the weekend.  The GC has beautiful scenery, however it's only groomed when there's enough snow.  We haven't had new snow lately so it's only being groomed weekends, which is actually perfect alternative on weekends. Only downside to the golf course (or maybe this is a plus) while they have groomed 8k of skiing trails, no lap  is any more than 4k, so you have to do a lot of laps to get in a good ski.  Last Sunday I did 5 laps with my garmin to map out all options, I didn't repeat any patterns, so at least it varies, but they are short...which if you want to take your kids, it's a great place away from the crowds and easy (just keep them away from one steep hill inside the Tumwater trail) and deer seem to always be out.
Ski hill, is dang hilly! Great if you want something different and really want to work your legs. I never get in much of a rhythm there because it always feels like I am going up a hill, and time wise from Wenatchee this takes the longest to get to.
Hope that helps, happy skiing!

If you're wondering my main problem is I power from mostly one side.  I like the "finding friends" drill and the balance  (which I also need help on) drill.

4 Laps..DONE!

I know my life is good!  I have amazing kids, a great man, and at a point in my life that's mature and evolved.  My kids are older, I have more free time.  Fridays I like to have to myself, after I work in Lo's classroom.  So today I drove up to Leavenworth to ski, set my goal for the morning of 3.5 laps (28k), knowing my real goal was 4 laps (32k).  See that's how I am with goals, I set ones that are attainable yet a challenge and respectable for that day, but I always go over them, always.  If I set out for a 4 mile run, I usually run 5.  Just the way I do it.
With very few time constraints on Fridays I knew I really should take advantage of it, so I went for it.  Followed what a friend said a few weeks ago and did the first lap without poles, next 2.5 were easy, last .5 I was hungry and thirsty (forgot my water).
2 hours 10 minutes later I got a kick arse workout.  For me it wasn't the physical challenge of this so much, as it was the mental challenge.  Loops are NOT my thing.  I seemed to have given my Ipod shuffle to Luke so music was out of the question, it was me and my thoughts, and I did it.
I have to say, most events for me are like this, I have great mental toughness (one I have worked on for years), and often it far outweighs my physical abilities.

*On another ski note, Luke and I did the full moon ski last night (too socked in though to see the moon), as some of you might remember last year, we got to the back meadow and saw "creatures" that at the time we were fairly certain was a cougar ready to pounce on us, then quickly made our way back to the front only to hear "wolves" howling at the moon (never mind there are no known wolf packs in the area).  We redeemed ourselves this year, we may have taken Rick as our scout, but we did it, and had fun!

Point and Shoot Fun

I think it's obvious, I love the Methow! Thank goodness Rick shares the same love for it. Here's few photos from todays ski. Took the shuttle again from Winthrop to Mazama and skied the 30k back!
I think my IPad app is going to get fired though, it said it would be in the high 20's so 11 degrees was a bit of a surprise. Don't worry, I always come prepared (I have different ski clothes I wear for 4-16 degrees, 17-28, and 28 and higher). One gift I got from my ex is the best ski pants I have ever owned (a craft wind blocking ski pant), love them, and they save me everytime!  My carbon poles are nice too so thank you ex! Another bonus I thought of today...as sucky as it is to not have the kids every other weekend, I am making the best use of it. I essentially have a free babysitter, it allows me the opportunity to come to the Methow all winter!

Treats are essential!
We play no favorites in this group, we represent all
These are the fast skiers...
And these are the fun ones!

Creatures of Habit

Perhaps....I got to thinking yesterday, skiing reverse day at the hatchery. I ski 80-100k a week, most of which is done there, but Thursdays you ski the opposite direction. Every time I do it I'm totally thrown off, it took me 2 full laps to actually settle in. I pondered this the whole time, I like routine, rituals, habits. I like to know what's ahead, when to speed up, when to rest, how long it should take, and so on. It's the way I am in work and family (much like my little miss), I'm not sure why, maybe I've had one too many bad surprises, I don't know. I don't think of this as a negative or a positive, just that I am aware of it!

This picture is today, back to the "regular" direction...phew
My favorite crossing guard!

Travel Tips

As a single Mom on a tight budget I get asked a lot how I am able to travel so much.  Well, I am a deal finder, but it takes time.  Below is an email I just sent another single Mom wanting to know any tips I had, so figured I may as well share.  Here you have it:

In no particular order:
First traveling  is a priority for me. It is top on my list of what I want to be able to give my kids. However I am a single Mom of a 10 and 15 year old, and the cost of raising them constantly goes up!
To make travel happen, there are things we do without: #1 is tv, I haven't had cable in over 15 years and figure I likely save anywhere from $50-$100 a month, so every month I put into an envelope (labeled travel) $50-$75 what I would guess tv would cost me.
Mileage card:
I am self employed and recently moved all of my bills related to the business to a mileage credit card (I like Hawaii, and have found Hawaiian miles are easy to use. I really like how they give you the month long calendar and it can show the price each way in miles or dollars, and lets you decide which leg of a trip you want to use what. For example if going and coming each cost 25k miles, but the $ prices going is $194, and coming home is $264, I will use miles on the legs home and pay for the going)
*if I travel in the peak time, such as Christmas, I will ONLY let myself go if half can be covered by miles, otherwise it's not worth it
Coin Jar: I have a constant coin jar that NEVER gets money taken out, this money is my travel spending money, I keep it going all year, and right before I go anywhere I roll Quarters and Dimes and take the rest to the coin-star (they charge almost 10% so the kids sort the dimes and quarters and I roll those so I don't have to pay the 10% on those)
Booking trips:
If a trip is short, or less than a week I have found that packages are often better as well as easier. My favorite sights are expedia and travelocity, but I spend a great deal of time picking the exact air on both as well as hotel in order to compare the cost to know for sure which is the better deal *on that note for short trips I like to spend the extra money and take a direct flight
*I also use the search option on both of these sights that allows you to search for hotels that offer free breakfast. Traveling with kids, can add up if you eat out every morning. My kids are not huge breakfast eaters so the continetal breakfast works quite well.
If you are traveling someplace like Hawaii (I could go on if you ever need more detail about favorite condo complexes on each of the islands), for a week or more I prefer staying in a condo. Typically they are larger than a hotel room, offer a full kitchen and sometimes a washer/dryer
I almost always use VRBO. If you do use VRBO (vacation rentals by owner) be prepared to know the area you want to stay, or even better the condo complex before searching(just ask people that go a lot). You can click on a particular complex and scroll through look at pictures, calendars and prices. I usually have post its out at this point to write down the vrbo # I want to go back and send an inquirey. Prices and condos vary. The earlier you look the more likely you are to get one of the nicer more updated condos at a better prices.
I typically make a list of what the kids and I like to eat and stock up on most things at Costco when we get in. Milk, sandwich goods, fruit...and such. We almost always eat breakfast at the condo and pack a lunch if we are heading to the beach...again this save $$$ by not eating out.
Priceline for cars is often great, but watch the fine print their taxes and fees are steap. For Hawaii during non peak I can usually "win" a mid or full size car for under $20 a day but by the time you add their fees it's double. I've had great luck/success with Costco travel for car rentals as well, they also let you cancel at no fee, in the event you find a better deal.
The biggest tip to affordable travel is traveling during non-peak times. During Christmas the deals are few and far between, it doesn't hurt to look but you will always pay more.
One of my favorite times to travel has been during the kids conference week in October. At their school they have half days, so by pulling them out that week they've never missed much.....that being said having a high schooler this has gotten a lot trickier and he doesn't really want to miss school :(
This fall I booked a long weekend (Thursday-Monday) with the kids to NYC, I found a very reasonable air/hotel package, right in Times Square (we are simply there to do Broadway each day),but I think because the weather will be cold and not great, the prices were low!
*If ever in New York to take in a show, buy day of at the TKTS ticket booth in Time Square, they offer 40-60% off
If ever looking for cheap airfare almost any California city don't forget to search Virgin America, their fares are awesome, plus its a super fun airline!
Hope that helps!

Sunday Photos

After I skied yesterday, I came home got in my jammies (at 9 am) and never got out of them.  Lo and I had the most chill wonderful "day off" ever.  I think we both needed that.  My dogs on the other hand were not impressed.
We went up Saddlerock today (while the Seahawks played, no one was out it was great) the trails are what they are for January, not so great, but it's super close, and very doable for kids and the dogs....even the basset hound!
Lo thought a ride would be nice

it came with a trade off, Rick needed to rest

This is a happy basset

It's cold

I did something I've never done before, I got up early while the kids were sleeping drove up to Leavenworth to ski, then came home as they woke and made breakfast. I knew it was supposed to be cold, and my kids would not want to go. They are at ages now where I feel the need to respect their choice to participate or not in activities I am doing.
I'm really glad I did it and now that I'm home and warm, it feels good. Thing is I kind of imagined a full parking lot of people wanting to beat the weekend crowd, was a little surprised, and panicked to be the ONLY car, gave myself a pep talk and came up with a plan to stay on the front loop until others arrived (didn't want to be cougar bait in the back meadow). As I got ready to take off I noticed a familiar car and was so happy to see a friend, just knowing someone else was out there gave me a peace of mind. My plan was to take no more than 2 hours 15 minutes from leaving my house and getting home. I can ski and 8k loop, when it's fast in just under 30 minutes so I figured I had time for 3 loops, good plan but it was only 8 degrees out when I finished. Was having a hard time keeping my face, hands and feet warm, core was fine. 2.5 was all I could stand (20k). The beauty of driving up alone is cranking my heat up really high and listening to music. It was a perfect morning. Asked Lo what we should do the rest of the day, she said nothing, she wants to stay home, and that sound fabulous to me! Have a good weekend!

Pardon the no makeup, but check out the ice crystals in my hair, pretty sure my face is pink because it's frozen!
8 degrees...when I finished

Fridays

This time a year I might be partial to Fridays. I get excited to wake up,  make the kids a big breakfast, work in Lo's classroom, then take off to Leavenworth and ski.
I started taking Fridays off after my ex left, mainly because I was having mommy guilt about Lo having to go to daycare at 6 am so many mornings a week. I've always been able to pick them up everyday after school, but because I work so early in the morning their Dad used to take them. When he left I adjusted my schedule for late start Mondays, then started taking off Fridays, Lo thought this was the greatest, and quite honestly so did I.

My world at the time felt like a tailspin, but I found by making myself get in the routine of heading up to ski every Friday provided a time to myself where I could think and clear my head.  It was the most therapeutic thing I could do for myself. It's since evolved, and I still love it,, but there's now a little community of women (and a few men), sometimes we carpool, we always see each other there, ski here and there together, then meet at the pantry when we're done. It's a mixed bunch, married, divorced and widowed, but we're all moms, out enjoying our time while doing something good for ourselves.

*funny note today, I got up there after my friend L but saw her a couple times out there. It was 15 degrees, which is doable it just takes a little longer to warm up. Once I got warmed up I figured I may as well stay out there, got done with 3 laps and felt pretty dang good (24k), only to go in and chat w L who had done 5 laps (40k), this woman is amazing! She's humble, gracious and provides a ton of inspiration!
Cheers To Friday!

Simple, yet Thoughtful

I got one of the good ones, men that is. Sad to say I didn't even know his kind existed. Swimming tonight (I think a lot under water), was thinking this man does SO much for me, in so many ways. Sometimes it's the littlest thoughtful things that really make me smile. On the occasions when I have no children here and stay the night (gasp, I know) at his house. I will often go upstairs and find the bed neatly made, but on my half two, extra thick throw blankets folded in half laid out lengthwise so I will stay warm (he sleeps with practically just a sheet), it's this little premeditated thought I just love...swoon!

Workouts 12/30-1/6

I'm back, but only to working out for fun.  I LOVE to skate ski, and last year had the opportunity to ski for several months, several days a week with Rick.  He is the best skier I have ever skied with.  Going into this season (my 5th year) I am feeling great.  I am skiing with people I never thought I could.  I feel comfortable, even somewhat confident.   I love it, and I do it because I enjoy it.  I signed up for something big, but don't have to start training until the end of March, my goal between now and then is to stay in shape, free of injuries, and to do what I enjoy, when I want to, which will be ski until there is no snow....that being said....I think this will be my last workout post for a while!

Monday 31th- 24K Skate/1.5 hour night hike
Tuesday 1st- 20K Skate
Wednesday 2st- Off
Thursday 3nd- 1 hour swim
Friday 4th- 24K skate
